Domain Expiry Monitoring

Monitor domain registration expiration via WHOIS lookups. Never accidentally lose your domain because you forgot to renew it.

Why Monitor Domain Expiry?

Losing your domain is catastrophic.

If your domain expires, your entire online presence disappears. Worse, someone else could register it and you might never get it back — or have to pay thousands to recover it.

Total Outage

Expired domain = website, email, and all services instantly offline.

Domain Hijacking

Expired domains can be grabbed by squatters or competitors within hours.

SEO Damage

Losing your domain means losing all your search engine rankings and backlinks.

Setting Up Domain Monitoring

1

Add New Monitor

Go to your Dashboard and click "New" button.

2

Enter Your Domain

Enter just the domain name (e.g., example.com).

No http:// or www prefix needed.

3

Select Domain Expiry Type

Choose "Domain Expiry" as the check type.

4

Configure Alert Days

Set when you want to be notified before expiration:

  • Free plan: 7 days before expiry
  • Paid plans: Custom days (e.g., 60, 30, 14, 7 days)

Check Frequency

Once Every 24 Hours

Domain expiry is checked once per day

Domain registration doesn't change frequently, so daily checks are sufficient. Combined with advance alert days, you'll have plenty of time to renew.

Alert Thresholds

When you'll be notified about expiring domains.

PlanAlert Days
Echo (Free)7 days before expiry
Pulse / WaveCustomizable (e.g., 60, 30, 14, 7 days)

Upgrade to Pulse or Wave to set custom alert days and get notified 60 days or more before expiration.

Understanding Domain Status

Common WHOIS status codes explained.

clientTransferProhibited

Domain is locked and cannot be transferred without unlocking. This is a good security measure.

ok / active

Domain is active with no pending operations or restrictions.

pendingDelete

Domain is in the deletion process and will be released soon. Act immediately!

redemptionPeriod

Domain has expired and entered redemption. You can still recover it, but fees are high.

Using Auto-Renewal?

Auto-renewal can fail

Even with auto-renewal enabled at your registrar, renewals can fail due to:
  • Expired credit card on file
  • Insufficient funds
  • Payment processor issues
  • Account holds or disputes
  • Registrar billing system errors

Domain monitoring is your safety net when auto-renewal fails.

Managing Multiple Domains

If you manage multiple domains (especially for clients), keeping track of all expiration dates is crucial. Add a monitor for each domain to get centralized expiry tracking.

Centralized Dashboard

See all domain expiry dates in one place, sorted by urgency.

Advance Warnings

Get alerts weeks in advance to coordinate renewals and budget.

Best Practices

Set Multiple Alert Days

Configure alerts at 60, 30, 14, and 7 days to ensure you don't miss renewal.

Enable Domain Lock

Keep clientTransferProhibited enabled to prevent unauthorized transfers.

Renew Early

Renew domains 1-2 months before expiry to avoid last-minute issues.

Monitor All Domains

Include all domains you own, even parked or redirect domains.
