What happens when a .app domain is not renewed
| Phase | How long | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-renew grace | Up to 45 days | Google Registry renews the name for a year as soon as it expires. Your registrar has 45 days to delete it instead and avoid paying, so it decides how long you keep to renew. |
| Redemption | 30 days | Your registrar can still redeem the deleted name, subject to Google's registrar abuse policy and a restore fee. A name deleted within 5 days of being registered gets no redemption at all. |
| Pending delete | 5 days | Five days is ICANN's typical length; this registry publishes none. Nobody can renew or restore the name now, and afterwards anyone can register it. |
Where the .app expiry date comes from
We read the expiry date from the registry's RDAP server, the modern replacement for WHOIS. That is the registry's own record.

WHOIS (port 43): none. IANA lists no WHOIS server for .app, so lookups go over RDAP only.
Registry: Charleston Road Registry (Google Registry)
Good to know about .app
- Browsers upgrade every http:// link to an .app site to https:// before sending a request, because the whole zone is HSTS-preloaded.
- The zone went on general sale on 8 May 2018, and Google calls it the first open top-level domain with built-in security.
- Trademark holders had a sunrise from 29 March to 1 May 2018, then anyone could buy during a week of early access at an extra fee.
- Hundreds of thousands of .app names were registered in the first twelve months, Google Registry reported on 8 May 2019.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check when a .app domain expires?
Enter the domain in the checker above. We read the expiry date from the registry's RDAP server, the modern replacement for WHOIS. That is the registry's own record. The result shows the expiry date and the days left.
What happens when a .app domain is not renewed?
Auto-renew grace up to 45 days, redemption 30, then about 5 to release. In order: Auto-renew grace (up to 45 days), then Redemption (30 days), then Pending delete (5 days).
Why does a new .app domain not load without a certificate?
Because the whole .app zone is on the HSTS preload list, browsers open .app sites over HTTPS only. A new .app shows an error until a valid certificate is installed, and a certificate that lapses takes the site offline the same way, even while the domain itself is paid up. Watch the certificate expiry date as closely as the domain's: on .app, visitors cannot tell the two failures apart.
Who runs the .app registry?
Charleston Road Registry (Google Registry). ICANN lists .app, run by Charleston Road Registry, as delegated on 2 July 2015, almost three years before it went on general sale. Renewal prices and the grace period you actually get are set by your registrar within the registry's rules.
