What happens when a .org domain is not renewed

- .org is run by Public Interest Registry, a nonprofit the Internet Society set up in 2002 to take the zone over from Verisign.
- PIR must charge registrars the same for every .org renewal, unless the owner agreed to a higher renewal price when registering.
- PIR inherited 2.6 million .org names in 2003, and the zone has since passed 12 million registrations worldwide.

Can the .org renewal price go up?
It can, but PIR's 2019 contract with ICANN makes it warn registrars at least 180 days before a renewal price rise and let them renew at the old price for up to ten years before it applies. If a rise is announced, ask your registrar to renew ahead.
Who runs the .org registry?
Public Interest Registry. Renewal prices and the grace period you actually get are set by your registrar within the registry's rules.
