What happens when a .in domain is not renewed
| Phase | How long | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal grace | Up to 45 days | Your registrar decides how many of these days you get. You can still renew at the normal price, but the site and email may already be switched off. |
| Redemption | 30 days | The domain is out of DNS. Only you can get it back, through your registrar, and a restore fee comes on top of the renewal. |
| Redemption hold | 5 days | The previous owner can no longer restore it. After five days it is released for anyone to register. |
Where the .in expiry date comes from
We read the expiry date from the registry's RDAP server, the modern replacement for WHOIS. That is the registry's own record.

Good to know about .in
- NIXI requires KYC for .in registrations under CERT-In guidelines issued under Section 70B of India's IT Act 2000.
- NIXI's WHOIS uses standard EPP status codes: autoRenewPeriod during grace, then redemptionPeriod, and pendingDelete in the last five days.
- Restoring an expired .in costs the registrar a restore fee plus a one-year renewal, and it may pass both on to you.

35 days after your registrar deleted it: 30 days of redemption plus the 5-day hold, if nobody restores it. NIXI says to add 35 days to the "last updated on" date in WHOIS. Only the sponsoring registrar shown in WHOIS can restore it before then.
