What happens when a .com domain is not renewed
| Phase | How long | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal grace | Up to 45 days | Verisign renews a lapsed .com for a year the day after it expires, and your registrar decides how many of the 45 days you keep to pay. Moving it to another registrar now cancels that automatic year; the new registrar adds one paid year instead. |
| Redemption | 30 days | Verisign accepts just one request for a .com in this state: a restore from your registrar, which charges a restore fee on top of the renewal. |
| Pending delete | 5 days | Verisign rejects every change. Five days later it purges the name from the registry database and anyone can register it. |
Where the .com expiry date comes from
We read the expiry date from the registry's RDAP server, the modern replacement for WHOIS. That is the registry's own record.

Good to know about .com
- Your registrar must remind you, usually by email, about one month and one week before a .com expires, and again within five days after if it is still not renewed.
- The registry pulls a .com out of the zone file the moment it enters redemption, so the site and email stop for everyone within a day or two, as cached DNS records run out.
- A .com can be paid up to 10 years ahead, so a far-off expiry date usually means the owner prepaid, not that it renews itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check when a .com domain expires?
Enter the domain in the checker above. We read the expiry date from the registry's RDAP server, the modern replacement for WHOIS. That is the registry's own record. The result shows the expiry date and the days left.
What happens when a .com domain is not renewed?
Up to 45 days of grace, 30 of redemption, then 5 pending delete. In order: Renewal grace (up to 45 days), then Redemption (30 days), then Pending delete (5 days).
Can the .com renewal price go up?
Yes. Verisign's contract with ICANN sets a maximum wholesale .com price, starting from $10.26, and lets Verisign raise it by up to 7% a year in the last four years of every six-year period, counted from 26 October 2018. Your registrar adds its own margin on top. Years you pay for in advance, up to ten, are billed at today's price.
Who runs the .com registry?
VeriSign Global Registry Services. Renewal prices and the grace period you actually get are set by your registrar within the registry's rules.
